2013 Oscars: Movies that Make a Difference

The American Movie Industry is a huge part of our National Culture. No country on earth produces more, or better films. Some movies are for fun- others for thrills, while still others are meant to inform and impact in addition to entertaining. Those movies that do the best at the box office say a lot about American interests and values. Those that are recognized at the Oscars say alot about what we value. More than ever the Oscars are going to those films that make a difference.

For best picture this year, the nominees are: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty.

Which have you seen? Which movies have you seen this year that you think should be up for best picture but aren't? Why? Which movie won- and what do you think about the Academy's decision?

Which other movies have you seen that have made an impact on you... made you think, reflect, wonder...about life, or America, or the future, or the past...? What lessons have you learned through the movies?
